Old Kulta Katriina bags

coffee bag basket with square weaving

This bag has been waiting to be put together for a long time, because I prefer to keep the squares as squares, rather than ready-made bags, which take up much more space at home. And I only collect the bags when there is a need for it. This bag was given as a gift, so I got rid of a few squares again.

These squares are woven from old Kulta Katriina coffee bags with a brown background and shiny coffee cups. The almost black squares of the bottom are woven from the bottom edges of coffee bags, which also have a little brown.

I again used black gift ribbon to connect the squares and finished the top edge of the bag with black anorak cord. As a needle, the same old mattress needle with a rounded tip.

There was enough material left over from the same coffee bags for four squares, where different patterns have been tried out from the coffee saucer. The bottom of the basket has a black square woven from other Kulta Katriina coffee bags.

zigzag woven coffee bag basket

Zigzag weaving works in many respects in the same way as square weaving. The strip width is calculated in the same way and the pattern design can be done in the same way. The weavingis starts in the same way, but after half a square the direction is reversed and the weavingis continues to form a zigzag shape. The woven pieces are also joined like squares by sewing from the hinges. The zigzag queue can also be combined with turns, in which case the weaving direction is turned twice in the same direction. The picture below shows an example of changing direction. A change of direction is needed in building the base of the basket.

The sides of the basket or bag are formed of solid zigzag rings. Three of those rings are woven for this basket.

The innermost layer of the bottom of the basket is woven from 24 strips, the outermost layer from 72 strips and there are 84 strips in each edge layer. So a total of 348 strips. The width of the coffee bag is 14,8 cm and the width of the strip is 6,8 cm. In the video you can see the whole steps of weaving the basket:

The size of the basket is about 31 x 31 x 41 cm. A lower or higher basket can be obtained by reducing or adding the edge layers.

kulta katriina coffee bag basket

Kulta Katriina coffee bags have had different coffee cup patterns over the years and two different ones have been combined in this basket. Of these, the older ones (on the right with brown backgrounds) are from 2007-2008 and the newer ones from 2012-2014.

Two squares of the basket are woven from brown coffee bags on the right, joining strips cut from different parts of the bag. The other six squares are woven from the black and yellow coffee bags on the left. There are two squares of each design woven with different patterns. Each side of the basket has different patterns and the bottom contains two different patterns. Instructions for cutting into squares can be found in the weaving patterns.
